I found it quite twilightish humorous, and loved the refrain of ‘why he left’.
Would a semicolon not work better here or is this form OK too?
‘I decided to play the wallflower and found a quiet corner in the living room: It (* room; it) seemed an appropriate response given my temporary persona.’

Good catch. See it’s always helpful to have an extra set of eyes.
I decided a period was more appropriate as a semicolon is used to separate two independent clauses too, but I prefer the period here, especially since the second sentence isn’t totally an independent clause as it is dependent on the previous sentence, “it” is referring to the corner.
It could also be a stylistic move by the writer?
