Yeah that’s right. If you find you’re lacking descriptive language in your work, take a walk to the park, pluck up a piece of grass, and write everything that comes to mind when you look at it. This may sound silly, but it works to get your mind visually writing.
What do I mean by “visually writing”?
When you find yourself staring at a blade of grass and trying to come up with the right words to describe it, you’re actually using both hemispheres of the brain. You use one to be creative and the other hemisphere to be analytical.
If you find yourself sitting staring at grass like the town crazy and still can’t come up with anything, start with the basics. Start by finding simple words to describe the following:
- color
- shape
- size
Then think about how you would describe the way a blade of grass feels. Don’t limit yourself in the amount of words you write down. In fact I would recommend a minimum of twenty unique words describing your piece of grass. Remember not to limit yourself to nouns, use action words too.
Good luck!

I used this technique the other night. Yeah, I didn’t have to actually go outside and stare at the grass. I just sat and brainstormed all the words I would use to describe grass. After coming up with an extensive list, I sat down and used the same tip but instead I brainstormed all the words that would describe the main character of a new story I’m working on. Worked great now I’ve got a great intro already started.
