Think you’re running out of stories. Go out in public and join the human race again. As writers we tend to be a bit introverted. Some of us are down-right hermits. But to keep those creative juices flowing you need to interact with the audience to whom you are writing. Never forget that you are writing to other people who will respond only to a language they understand.
“Collect stories from everyone you meet.”
You’ve heard this before, but I’ll tell you again as it’s worth repeating. When writing a story you want universal appeal, meaning you want to appeal to as many readers as possible. You want to create universal understanding. When your audience reads your work you want them to be able to visualize your setting to the extent that they see themselves in your story. They feel it.
Create empathy
Empathy is the ability to recognize, perceive, and feel the emotions of others. The best excercise to help you write empathetically is to get out their and hear the stories others are sharing. Keep the amazing, the unusual, the strange, the irrational and even the mundane and seemingly normal stories you hear. Eventually, after you’ve listened long enough, you’ll begin to hear the universal meanings in all the stories we tell. Life, death, love…
Power your short story
Use your observations to power your writing. Study your stories for the underlying meaning and apply your new found understanding of the human condition.
