Carve Magazine : This One Thing
by Jaren Watson
Jaren Watson’s This One Thing is a story about love, loss, and life. It is a very charming story that opens with a man describing his comically, over sized dog. The man is also married, and they are the most loving couple. Trying to have a child, they are pleasantly surprised to learn that Susan, the man’s wife, is at last pregnant. Although a lack of history is present, it is replaced with an instant understanding of who the characters are.
Watson takes you through their excitement in a calm and loving way, as if you are seated beside them, watching their hopeful eyes look down on Susan’s now enlarged belly. He writes with a warm heart, taking you from one cozy scene to the next as these two lovers bask in their own love and excitement. The story engages you into their lives; into their joy, loss, and love for one another. When all the while, tagging along, is their big lovable dog.
At times the cozy light-hearted story turns to serious drama and wonderment, leaving you sad, but curious at the same time. Throughout the story, there is this overbearing belief in fate and a life source that cannot be ignored by the characters or by the reader. Loss occurs and an acceptance of it is found revealing a love that is unbreakable. Love it seems is “This One Thing” and you can’t help but smile through the joy and after the pain.
I truly enjoyed this story and I had on a smile the entire time. I would definitely recommend it to anyone in the mood for a light read that really warms your heart. Watson takes you on a trip that teaches you life lessons and makes you feel as if the characters are people you really know. You’ll feel like you’re reading about some old friends you’ve forgotten.
Read the story and let’s hear what you think.

I like the humor in the story, but I feel something is missing. It’s just too good to be true. Or maybe I just like writing that’s a bit more on the dark side. I guess I feel there should have been more of a conflict.
Oh well, it’s a good quick read.
