Contests Galore

There are plenty of high paying contests included in this weeks market listings. Dig up your best work and have others read it first, then send it in and cross your fingers.


Flask and Pen Literary Magazine is seeking submissions

FlaskandPen.com is a inviting online literary community that sparks thought, discussion, and interest in an entertaining fashion. They accept short fiction, poetry and essays writen on a topic selected by the staff. The topic may be a single word such as Sunrise, while at other times it may be a phrase such as New Adventures.

Minnesota Monthly’s Tamarack Award — May 15

$10,000 for an original, unpublished work of short fiction. The winning story will be published in Minnesota Monthly in November. Open to residents of Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa, Wisconsin, and Michigan. No entry fee.

Ramble Underground Short Fiction Contest — May 15

Every spring the online zine Ramble Underground offers a first prize of at least $100 and a second prize of at least $50 (amount varies with number of entries) to two stories. $6 entry fee.

Spokane Prize for Short Fiction (Eastern Washington University Press) — May 15

Winner will receive publication plus a $1500 cash prize. Finalists will each receive $50 worth of EWU Press books. $25 entry fee.

Writer’s Digest Annual Writing Competition — May 15

$3,000 cash and an all-expense paid trip to New York City to meet with editors or agents. Applications are accepted in ten categories. $15 entry fee.

New Letters Awards for Writers — May 18

$1500 for an original short story not to exceed 8,000 words. $15 entry fee includes subscription.

University of Georgia Press Flannery O’Connor Award for Short Fiction — May 31

Awards of $1,000 for a short story collection; winners are often published by the Press under a standard book contract. $25.00 entry fee.

PARSEC Science Fiction and Fantasy Short Story Contest

The contest is open to non-professional writers (those who have not met eligibility requirements for SFWA or equivalent). Previous multiple winners and current contest coordinators are also ineligible. The best story which relates to and features the contest theme will be published in the Confluence 2008 program book, and the author awarded the first prize of $200. At the discretion of the judges a second and third prize in the amounts of $100 and $50 may be awarded, with possible publication in a PARSEC INK publication. There is NO entry fee.
