If you have a work of fiction with an African American theme and you are submitting it to a journal whose interests lie in African American literature, you would say explain in your query letter that said journal may be interested in your piece as it is concerning the African American population or describe how your work is a perfect fit.

"Why your story is a good fit for the journal you are sending your submission."
That’s part of what a query letter is. By definition a query letter is a letter to an agent or editor designed to sell them on you as well as the story idea. According to The Fiction Forum, a query letter is simply, "A letter sent to a publisher or agent inquiring if her/she is interested in seeing your work." There are three main points you want to put across in your query letter:
1. Who you are and your qualifications as a writer i.e. publishing history or education.
2. What your work is about and why they might be interested.
3. Why your story is a good fit for the journal you are sending your submission.

Ok so I’ve looked around and I don’t really understand what a query letter is. Is it like a coverletter, where you describe your experience as a writer?
