    She opened her eyes and saw the colorful layers of riverbank rising to water’s surface above. The ripples showed her blue sky and sun dazzle and reminded her of all she would not experience again. An attempt to roll on her side to see if there was any fish around proved fruitless. The weight attached to her left leg would not allow it.

    I’ve been murdered, she thought. Her long, dark hair floated around the edges of her vision and she tried to touch it with her hand, out of habit. Her hand would not move. She was weak now. She opened her mouth and inhaled the river.

    By becoming a victim of crime, she had found the perfect peace.
