Making Connections

  1. Take a notebook and pen and go to Walmart, to the magazine section.
  2. For 30-45 minutes, wander the isle, flipping open magazines at random. Pause before the shelf, close your eyes, reach out with your hand and choose one magazine. Flip it open and see if there’s a paragraph on the page that stands out. Write it down.
  3. Repeat this four times.
  4. Read the group of quotes and look for common themes. Write them down as they come to you.

I promise I’m not wasting your time

This exercise forces you to think in your abstract mind and connect things that may not join naturally. As a writer of fiction it is your job to make a connection with your reader. By practicing this writing exercise you are honing your ability to do so.

Good Luck!

Fiction prompt inspired by Koreanish, thank you.
